Jargon Busters – Out Of Home

16 November 2015

What it isn’t:

A bold new approach for sending eviction notices.

What it is:

Any advertising that is seen almost always outside of the home. Seems pretty obvious, when you think about it.

OOH ads typically consist of billboards, advertising hoardings, bus and bus stop posters, branded vehicles, and sign posts (such as For Sale signs from estate agents).

When it can work:

Most people admit to rarely paying attention to this format of advertising. However, when done correctly, it can be very effective at leaving a lasting impression on the public- especially when the advertisers play with the medium itself in a clever or inventive way, like Kit Kat’s half-finished billboard or the tiny smart car ad squeezed onto the side of a regular display.

Bus adverts are a good way to get your ad seen by a lot of people, as are branded vehicles – after all, cars and buses get around.

For smaller or local businesses directed at consumers unsure about out of home advertising, it’s wise to start close to home, where your business is located.
