Jargon Busters – CPC & CPM

06 November 2015

What it isn’t:

The hip new cosmetic that can half the amount of wrinkles you currently don’t have.

What it is:

CPC – Cost Per Click.

CPM – Cost per Mille / Thousand Views.

Both relate to online ad pricing, and basically determine how much bang for your buck you are getting when you advertise on a website, through Google AdWords, or on social media paid promotion.

The terms are used for both buying and selling advertising space.

Cost per click is useful for when you want a lot of conversions, and want to build up the amount of people being directed to a specific page.

Cost per Thousand Views comes into play when you want to build awareness and recognition of a brand, so you need to reach as many people as you can.

There are more options beyond these, including: CPA (Cost per Action, pay for every conversion); oCPM (Optimised CPM, on Facebook); eCPM (effective CPM, when converting CPC into CPM).

The list goes on, as do the acronyms- keep an eye out for more TLA’s (Three Letter Acronyms) in future Jargon Busters posts.
